Working in the banking industry, Shay knew all about business analysis, finance, and forecasting. When he realized that his work didn’t offer the challenge or room to grow that he craved, he decided to leave the industry. He took some time off, and after careful research, he became interested in web development.
Shay began teaching himself to code using free online resources and loved the rewarding and challenging nature of the work. He quickly realized that learning to code well on his own was going to be difficult, so he looked for expert guidance. Thinkful’s Engineering Immersion program piqued Shay’s interest. The flexibility of an online bootcamp that he could complete from anywhere appealed to him. “Thinkful seemed like online learning was their specialty, and they seemed to have a lot of experience with it” he said. He also wanted to really dive into coding and master the skills. “It's a longer program, which is what I was looking for. I knew coding wasn't something you'd learn overnight.”
Transitioning from a career in banking to full-stack web development in a matter of months is a challenge, without a doubt. “It was one of the hardest things I've done, but one of the most rewarding. I wanted it to be challenging” Shay said.
Shay loved the challenge and content of the fast-paced program, as well as the mentoring and career services. His mentor was especially helpful throughout his Thinkful experience. “My mentor was good at communicating and answering my questions, had lots of patience, and was very supportive,” Shay noted. He also appreciated the many resources available to students, adding that the career progression information that he received toward the end of the program “was amazing.”
Shay is now a full-stack developer at a real-time payment processing company - Repay. His impressive React skills caught the eye of a recruiter, and he had valuable references from Thinkful to vouch for his abilities. He loves his work, and enjoys that as a full-stack developer working on the front end, back end, and mobile, every day at work is different.
Now that he’s finished with the program and employed, Shay shares that life is “a hundred times better. I’m happy to get back to work, even after a vacation,” he says. With enjoyable work and a strong sense of job security, he’s happier and less stressed than before Thinkful. This carries over into his family life. “My wife can definitely vouch for how much happier I am” he says. “This is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”
There’s no telling where Shay’s web development journey will take him next, but with his new tech skills, his sense of optimism, and his appetite for a challenge, he’s sure to continue to impress.
