Become a web designer

“After spending a couple years in the corporate world, I was ready to transition into something with a faster pace. Working in tech seemed exhilarating. By the time I finished Thinkful's Frontend course, I knew I wanted to (and was ready to) become a developer. A few months into my first full-time role, I started the design course for one reason: learn to design my own mockups. Five weeks into the course, I had achieved my goal AND had time learn about typography, color theory, visual hierarchy with my awesome mentor.”

Learn web design fundamentals with a mentor

It’s impossible to deny the influence of great design on the web. It lets us build clear, focused products. In this course, you’ll learn that design is a methodical approach to problem solving. You'll gain real-world experience from day one. You'll start by creating user stories, then move on to understanding customers and exploring concepts like color theory, typography, and visual hierarchy. As with all Thinkful courses, you’ll apply these new concepts and hard skills (like Photoshop) by digging into impressive projects for your portfolio. At each step, you'll have an experienced designer by your side to help you tackle difficult design decisions.

Unit 1 - Your first client: learn photoshop as you re-brand Amazon

Concepts covered

Photoshop layers, blending modes, color modes, color theory, applying typography, adding images, calls to action (CTAs)

Project(s) you'll build

  • Amazon Mindmap. Create a list or “mindmap” about Amazon including all word combinations and possibilities. After you have 4 words that best encompass the client, you'll start gathering images for a swipe file. A swipe file is a collection of inspirational or thematic source images that reflect the mood and voice of your project.
  • Amazon Style Tile. Learn how to form a strong design direction and create a point of reference by defining a color palette, typeface families, iconography, and possible interface elements.

Unit 2 - Give Craigslist its much needed makeover

Concepts covered

Design critique, creating high-fidelity mockups, understanding grid systems, visual hierarchy of a webpage, typography

Project(s) you'll build

  • Craigslist Makeover. You’ll receive a creative brief and be tasked to redesign Craiglist’s homepage from the ground up. With your design knowledge, you'll create mockups for the redesign and then go through a design critique with your peers and mentor.
  • Capstone Project. Design your own website from scratch! In this final project, you’ll take full creative freedom, apply all the concepts you’ve learned and push your limits as a designer - all with the help of your mentor.

Modern Web Design

I am a full-stack web developer with an background in illustration and painting. I hit a wall in my career and decided to up my skills with the Modern Web Design course. The exercises were thorough and I learned a great deal about typography, design, logos, etc. My mentor was amazing, and we really worked well together. She gave me a lot of ideas and tools for finding inspiration on the web. This course and my mentor really helped enhance my skills and helped me to become a more aware and thoughtful front end developer. I am back on track and excited about what I have learned.

Modern Web Design

coursereport small logo via Course Report

I completed two Thinkful courses: frontend and web design. Frontend one year ago and web design this week.

First of all I want to say a huge thank you to my teacher - Alissa Pierce. She motivated and inspired me every session.

I'm a lucky person, because I have a profession I love - already a year I'm frontend developer. But I started as a Thinkful student, that was my first and probably the most important step. I like Thinkful for two things: ability to study what you really want to study online and not very expensive and for huge support during all the studying. Then you are in the beginning of your career it's really hard to believe in yourself, to believe that one day you'll become a good specialist. And my opinion that mentors in Thinkful are doing a great job to make you self assure, to make you believe that you can do it!

I don't know where I will be in web design in one year, but I know that if you want something really hard you'll get it: not at one moment, but step by step. Thinkful already helped me in many steps and I'm not going to stop.
